Machrihanish Golf Club Review: Golf as it's meant to be - if you can get there

Machrihanish Golf Club Review: Golf as It's Meant to Be

Located in a remote area, Machrihanish Golf Club offers a world-class links experience that is surprisingly affordable. Established in 1876 as The Kintyre Golf Club, it expanded from a 12-hole layout to 18 holes three years later with the help of Old Tom Morris. The first hole, created during this expansion, is famously regarded as one of the best opening holes in golf.

Getting There and Location

The most challenging part of visiting Machrihanish is the journey itself. Situated about 20 miles from the Mull of Kintyre, the course lies near the beach where Sir Paul McCartney once filmed a music video. The picturesque drive along the A83 takes about three hours, but it rewards golfers with a course ranked among the top 40 in Great Britain and Ireland, and in the top 20 in Scotland.

Additional Golf Opportunities

Visitors can enhance their experience with rounds at nearby Machrihanish Dunes and Dunaverty courses, making their trip even more memorable.

Course Design and History

Old Tom Morris described the land here as "specifically designed by the almighty for playing golf."
Tom Doak said it is "the only course in Scotland that still seems just as raw and natural as the first time I was there 35 years ago."

JH Taylor made alterations in 1914, followed by final changes from Sir Guy Campbell in the 1940s. Despite these modifications, the course retains its natural appearance, blending seamlessly with the surrounding terrain.

Growing Recognition

In recent decades, more golfers have discovered Machrihanish, appreciating its raw, authentic links character.
