South Korea reaches 300,000 international enrolments

South Korea Surpasses 300,000 International Student Enrolments

South Korea has achieved its goal of hosting 300,000 international students nearly two years ahead of schedule. In August 2025, the number of international student enrolments exceeded 300,000, with over one-third coming from Vietnam, according to government immigration statistics.

Key Factors Behind the Growth

“Korea’s rise as a study destination isn’t happening by accident… After the pandemic, many students in Asia began looking for good-quality education closer to home, and Korea fits that bill perfectly,” said Kyuseok Kim, director of IES Abroad’s Seoul centre, in an interview with The PIE.

Kim noted that universities in South Korea have expanded English-taught programs, strengthened global partnerships, and actively recruited students beyond traditional markets. Additionally, Korea’s cultural appeal—ranging from K-pop to K-beauty—has increased its visibility and attraction for international students.

Student Composition and Enrollment Types

Nearly 75% of international students are enrolled in university degree programs. The remaining students are primarily studying Korean language courses, with a small number holding foreign language training visas.

Government Initiatives Driving Growth

The rise in international student numbers reflects steady growth supported by government policies. A key driver has been the “Study Korea 300K” initiative launched in 2023, which aimed to reach 300,000 international students by 2027 but was achieved much earlier.

Summary: South Korea’s strategic expansion of programs and cultural appeal has rapidly increased its international student population, surpassing targets years ahead through focused government initiatives.
