The Real Story Behind Netflix

The Real Story Behind Netflix

The new limited series dramatizes the short tenure of the 20th commander in chief, who was fatally shot by Charles J. Guiteau, a lawyer convinced he had secured Garfield’s election.

Guiteau's Campaign Efforts

Before the 1880 presidential election, 39-year-old lawyer Charles J. Guiteau distributed printed copies of his speech to anyone who would listen. This speech was initially meant to endorse the clear favorite at the Republican National Convention: two-time former President Ulysses S. Grant. However, Grant lacked enough support to secure the nomination for a third term.

Instead, James A. Garfield, recently elected to represent Ohio in the Senate, became the alternative choice. Guiteau wasn’t loyal to any candidate, as he replaced Grant’s name with Garfield’s in his speech, believing his persuasive words could elect either man.

The Election and Guiteau’s Expectation

Garfield won the presidency, narrowly defeating Democratic Civil War General Winfield Scott Hancock. Afterward, Guiteau expected compensation for his efforts, believing the new president owed him a significant government position, preferably a diplomatic post abroad.

“I hereby make a formal application for the Austrian Mission,” Guiteau wrote to Garfield and incoming Secretary of State James G. “I feel I have a right to do it on account of my services during the canvass.”

Rejection and Overlook

However, Guiteau never received this appointment. One main issue was that neither Garfield nor his ally Blaine knew who Guiteau was, making his claim invalid.

Guiteau’s expectation for recognition and reward went unfulfilled, leading to tragic consequences.

Author’s Summary

The series reveals how Charles Guiteau’s misguided ambition and entitlement after Garfield’s election led to devastating historical events.
