Director Edgar Wright is working on his most expensive and challenging movie to date, The Running Man, an adaptation of Stephen King's dystopian novel. The production faced harsh conditions, including a blizzard in Bulgaria during February, where much of the filming took place.
Glen Powell, who stars as a game-show contestant fighting for survival, filmed a demanding scene nearly naked in subfreezing temperatures. Wrapped only in a towel, he dangled eight stories high, rappelling down a building while the crew, including Wright, endured the cold from the ground.
“It’s always temporary pain for eternal cinematic glory,” Powell joked about the grueling scene.
Known for his precise choreography of action and unique style seen in films like Hot Fuzz and Baby Driver, Wright carefully monitored the shoot to capture the perfect shot. Powell spent around 30 minutes hanging by a harness as the camera reset to nail the sequence.
Wright’s films blend genre elements with a quirky twist, often described as “Tarantino on laughing gas.” His dedication to detail ensures The Running Man will reflect his signature mix of tension and humor.
The project has the approval of Stephen King, whose novel provides the story foundation. Wright’s adaptation aims to honor the original dystopian themes while delivering intense cinematic moments.
Author’s summary: Edgar Wright’s 'The Running Man' combines extreme weather challenges and intense performance with meticulous direction to create his most ambitious and costly film yet.
