Edgar Wright shared a hidden Easter egg in his adaptation of The Running Man involving actor Josh Brolin and his family, adding a deeper meaning to the film.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan, Wright explained that Josh Brolin, who plays the villain Dan Killian, is not the only Brolin involved in the movie. His father, James Brolin, appears too, but by sheer coincidence.
James Brolin was cast in the film before Josh and appears through a clip from the older film Skyjacked, where he played the hijacker. Wright said:
"Josh Brolin is not the only Brolin in this movie. By complete coincidence, his dad is in it as well."
Wright only realized the family link after casting Josh. He then decided to keep James Brolin's clip in the film, stating:
"So we wrote that in. We got the clip cleared — and this was all before Josh Brolin was cast as Killian. And then when Josh Brolin was cast, I suddenly said to him, 'Hey, your dad’s in the movie too,' because James Brolin plays the hijacker in Skyjacked."
Edgar Wright subtly included both Josh and James Brolin in The Running Man, creating a meaningful Easter egg that highlights a unique family connection in the film.
