Jacob Elordi, star of Saltburn and Euphoria, shared his early doubts before accepting the role of The Creature in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein.
Despite his excitement about working with del Toro, Elordi initially worried that The Creature might be a silent character, which he thought could be difficult to portray.
"The only thought that I can remember having before I'd even gotten the script was that, and I shouldn't have doubted it, knowing Guillermo, but was that the Creature may be nonverbal and may be so sort of conceptual and hidden under this thing."
Elordi was concerned he might not be able to express the Creature’s inner turmoil effectively without dialogue.
"Obviously, there's always a performance in those creatures, but just that I wouldn't be able to maybe articulate the sort of existential crisis that the Creature's having."
Those fears faded quickly once Elordi read del Toro’s script and realized the character had much more to say:
"As soon as I read the script and he said, 'Now, I'll tell you my tale,' and I realised there was still this much script to go."
He also appreciated how true the adaptation stayed to the original novel by Mary Shelley.
"I was like, oh, wow, this is the Creature as it is in Mary Shelley's text."
Jacob Elordi overcame initial doubts about playing a potentially silent Creature character, finding del Toro’s script richly expressive and faithful to Mary Shelley’s original vision.
