Last month of spring to deliver a drenching across WA

Severe Weather Expected Across Western Australia

A powerful weather system is forecasted to bring thunderstorms, strong winds, hail, and heavy rain to much of Western Australia this week. Some regions may see rainfall exceeding 50mm through Thursday night.

Weather Conditions and Forecast

The stormy weather results from a trough and a low-pressure system off the west coast. Earlier this week, these conditions produced warm and sunny weather across the state.

Areas south of Carnarvon could receive up to 50 millimetres of rain over the next two days before clearer skies arrive.

Recent Weather Patterns in Spring

Spring's final month has seen a mix of weather for Western Australia, from warm nights to approaching thunderstorms with lightning displays expected in the upcoming days.

Lightning storms started affecting areas south of Perth early Tuesday morning, accompanied by scattered showers. These storms briefly paused during the day but resumed overnight with greater intensity.

Origins of the Stormy Weather

Looking back a few days, a trough formed along the west coast over the weekend, bringing warm conditions to many parts of the state. The eastern side of this trough is ideal for thunderstorm formation.

On Monday, the sunny conditions ended as a low-pressure system developed within the trough line.

These atmospheric developments explain the shift to unsettled, stormy weather currently being experienced.
