Should humanity be the greatest fear in the galaxy? This provocative question lies at the core of Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest film, Bugonia. Known for crafting movies that spark deep discussions, Lanthimos continues this trend with a story blending kidnapping, alien science fiction, and a reflection on the world’s state.
Bugonia follows Teddy Gatz (Jesse Plemons), an amateur beekeeper and low-level warehouse worker at the megacorporation Auxolith. Teddy believes Auxolith’s chemicals are causing Colony Collapse Disorder, which is devastating his beehives. For Teddy, this issue is deeply personal. Years earlier, an experimental drug trial by Auxolith left his mother, Sandy (Alicia Silverstone), brain-dead.
Consumed by anger and conspiracy theories found online, Teddy is convinced that Auxolith's CEO, Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone), is actually an alien from the Andromeda galaxy. He believes she aims to destroy humanity by targeting the bees first. Determined to prevent this, Teddy embarks on a mission to stop the destruction.
“Yorgos Lanthimos is a filmmaker who sets out to make movies that make people talk each time he directs.”
“Teddy takes Auxolith’s actions very personally, linking them to the drug trial that brain-dead his mother.”
Bugonia uses a surreal sci-fi narrative to critique humanity’s destructive tendencies and warns of the consequences when corporate greed harms both nature and human life.
