Ego Nwodim has officially departed from Saturday Night Live after seven seasons, sparking conversation within and beyond the comedy community. She is leaving the celebrated NBC sketch show to explore new creative avenues.
Announced during an early November interview on the Sherri show, Ego described her departure with honesty and humor. She shared,
“It felt like the right moment to make space for something else.”Despite calling SNL her “longest relationship,” she spoke about the breakup with clarity rather than bitterness.
Ego explained that her exit was a mix of personal choice and a strategic move to expand her creative horizons. She is currently developing a solo show at Lincoln Center and is interested in writing, directing, and starring in new projects.
Underlying her decision was the significant reality of being one of the very few Black women on SNL. Since the show began in 1975, only seven Black women, including Nwodim, have been part of the cast out of over 160 performers. This fact highlights the rarity and importance of her role.
“Being the only Black woman on the show wasn’t something I took lightly,” Nwodim shared.
This experience gave her a unique perspective on representation within a long-standing institution.
Ego Nwodim's departure from SNL marks a purposeful transition toward broader creative ventures, spotlighting the importance of Black female representation on the iconic show.
