"Past Lives" by Jay Som ft. Hayley Williams - Northern Transmissions
Jay Som is the project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. She will release her new album Belong on November 7. Ahead of the album’s launch, Jay Som shared the track “Past Lives,” featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore.
The two artists met in Nashville to collaborate on the song alongside Steph Marziano. Williams’ soft harmonies on the sweeping "Past Lives" enhance the song’s melancholic feel—capturing the sensation of drifting through lows, gaining momentum and then losing it again.
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before the recording of ‘Float,’ I still can’t believe it happened,” Duterte said of the collaboration. “She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously accepts and uplifts the people around her. We’re all so lucky to witness her talent and live on the same timeline as her.”
The track is a powerful composition, with its slowed midsection feeling like an internal struggle. The album Belong also features contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (producer for Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. For the first time, Jay Som welcomed guest vocalists on the album.
