Detention Sergeant Charged with Battery

BONNERS FERRY — Bryant Brown, a former employee of the Boundary County jail, faces a charge of aggravated battery for allegedly assaulting an inmate in January 2023. Charges were filed in September, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 17 at the Boundary County Courthouse.

Brown, 37, posted a $50,000 bond and has not yet entered a plea. Two previous hearings were canceled for undisclosed reasons.

Incident Details

The incident involved an inmate arrested by the Bonners Ferry Police Department on a misdemeanor warrant from Kootenai County. According to a probable cause affidavit by Sheriff's Detective Brandon Blackmore, the inmate was intoxicated and behaved abusively and uncooperatively toward jail staff.

After a heated verbal exchange with Brown, the inmate entered his holding cell. Blackmore's testimony states that Brown pushed the inmate against a glass window in the cell and punched him, causing the inmate’s head to strike a brick wall.

The inmate tried to hold Brown's arms to stop the attack but did not resist further. The affidavit also claims Brown grabbed the inmate's throat with both hands and slammed his head into the brick wall.
