Auckland FC achieved a gritty 2-1 victory over Wellington Phoenix at Sky Stadium on Saturday evening, extending their winning streak to four games in the NZ A-League derby despite finishing with only nine men.
The visitors stunned the crowd within the first half-minute as Jesse Randall’s blistering pace broke through the Phoenix defense. His low cross found Sam Cosgrove, who calmly slotted home from close range, quieting the ‘Yellow Fever’ supporters.
Wellington quickly leveled through Nigerian forward Ifeanyi Eze, who intercepted a misplaced pass from Jake Brimmer and bent a superb long-range strike into the net.
Randall once again exploited the high defensive line, sprinting clear before lofting a clever chip over goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi. The ball appeared to take a slight deflection from Cosgrove as it crossed the line, restoring Auckland’s advantage.
The match’s turning point came when Auckland’s Dan Hall received a red card after pulling down substitute Corban Piper, denying a clear chance on goal. Moments later, Logan Rogerson’s rash tackle saw him dismissed as well, reducing Auckland to nine men.
Despite losing their captain Jake Brimmer to a dislocated shoulder and relentless pressure from Phoenix, Auckland held firm in defense to secure an extraordinary derby triumph.
