Sam Smith recalls 'nightmare' experience of getting liposuction at 13

Sam Smith Reflects on Liposuction Experience at 13

Sam Smith revealed the emotional struggle behind their decision to have liposuction on their chest as a teenager. In a conversation on the Podcrushed podcast with Penn Badgley, the non-binary singer discussed how the procedure stemmed from the challenges they faced with body image growing up.

Reasons Behind the Surgery

At 13, Sam chose surgery primarily due to intense teasing and discomfort in social settings. They shared,

“I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old, because I had a growing chest. There were all sorts of reasons why, but mainly, I was just getting so teased, I couldn't go swimming in school, and I couldn't - like, getting changed in the locker room was hell. So, I got liposuction when I was 13 years old.”

Emotional and Social Impact

Sam opened up about their ongoing struggles with food and body image during that period, highlighting their parents’ strong support for the surgery decision. They explained how the liposuction, despite its success, brought additional difficulties.

“It was just all a struggle with food and stuff. And the liposuction, it worked, but it was also a nightmare because they gave me a bandage,”

The bandage became a social tool at school, allowing Sam to skip lines at lunch, leading to them wearing it for nearly a year.

“If I wore the bandage, it meant that I would get to the front of the lunch queue. So, I just kept this bandage on for nearly a year, and I'd be like, ‘Oh, don't come close to me,’ and then I'd just get first at lunch...”

Summary

Sam Smith’s liposuction at 13 was both a rescue from bullying and a complicated emotional journey, underscored by body image issues and the social challenges of adolescence.
