The documentary Kuleana, narrated by Woody Harrelson, will be shown Sunday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center during the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival, presented by Halekulani Hotel. Directed by London-based filmmaker Georgia Scott, this timely film offers a visually striking exploration of ocean plastic pollution, focusing on Hawaii’s unique environmental challenges.
The Hawaiian Islands serve as a natural filter for global plastic waste, making their shores among the most polluted worldwide with accumulated marine debris. This issue is highlighted through powerful imagery and personal stories in the film.
“This is the Hawaii nobody sees,” said Kolten Wong, former professional baseball player, standing at Kamilo Beach on Hawaii Island. This is where the Great Pacific Garbage Patch deposits large amounts of plastic trash.
The amount of plastic in the ocean is expected to double within the next 15 years. By 2050, plastic pollution could outweigh all marine life combined, emphasizing the critical need for awareness and action.
Kuleana presents a sobering look at an invisible environmental crisis, urging viewers to consider their role in protecting the ocean for future generations.
