NBC’s new mockumentary comedy Stumble debuts Friday night, featuring Jenn Lyon as the head of a chaotic cheer squad. Taran Killam joins her onscreen as her husband in this spirited take on competitive cheerleading.
The series draws inspiration from Netflix’s hit documentary Cheer and lists Monica Aldama among its executive producers. At its center is Courteney Potter, a former junior college coach who once held 14 championship titles, tying the record for the most wins in cheer history.
Potter’s career derailed after a leaked video from a party with her team led to her firing from Sammy Davis Sr. Junior College. Seeking redemption, she accepts a job at the much smaller Headltston State Junior College—where she discovers her new team has only one member.
Her sole cheerleader, Madonna, struggles with narcolepsy during routines. Determined to rebuild, Courteney recruits DiMarcus, a flashy football player; Stevie, a former cheerleader returning after 16 years; Peaches, a petty criminal with surprising parkour talent; and Sally, who constantly stumbles into absurd mishaps.
“When I look at this team, I see grit, determination, heart. That’s what people want to be a part of.”
With competitive cheerleading now part of mainstream pop culture largely thanks to Netflix’s Cheer, Stumble flips the emotional intensity of that world into a heartfelt, comedic underdog story.
Stumble reimagines the drama of cheerleading through humor, delivering a story about redemption, teamwork, and absurd perseverance in the face of defeat.
