Avelo Airlines continues to operate its current schedule at Wilmington Airport (ILG) through April. Wilmington remains one of the airline's stronger markets despite federal orders to reduce flights at 40 major airports by 10% due to the government shutdown.
Although Avelo generally serves smaller airports like Wilmington, it faces mandatory reductions in service to major destinations such as Orlando. Nevertheless, the airline announced on social media that it will sustain its current schedule for now, citing its focus on smaller cities as key to maintaining flights.
"Avelo announced via social media that it will be able to keep its flight schedule, at least for the time being. The airline cited its strategy of flying from smaller cities as a reason for maintaining service."
Regulators instructed major airlines not to limit their flight reductions solely to affiliated regional carriers serving smaller cities. This raised concerns that towns relying on regional jets, such as Salisbury, Maryland, could experience significant service cuts. The order arrives during a typically slow period for airlines, but ongoing government shutdowns extending toward the Thanksgiving holiday could lead to further disruptions.
Avelo plans to operate three Boeing 737 jets out of Delaware Airport, increasing its local fleet after previously maintaining two jets in 2025. This expansion will reduce some twice-weekly flights from Wilmington, while certain routes, like San Juan, Puerto Rico, will see increased frequency during winter, rising from two to at least three flights per week.
Avelo Airlines holds its winter flight plan steady by leveraging its focus on smaller airports, despite federal mandates to cut flights at major hubs amid the government shutdown.
