The FAA has mandated a 10% reduction in flights at 40 major airports, including Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Tampa International Airport (TPA), due to the federal government shutdown starting November 7.
Avelo Airlines, which operates flights at these airports, will have to adjust their schedules accordingly. A statement on their website says:
“We will carefully assess flights in and out of these airports and make thoughtful schedule changes that support the FAA’s efforts and minimize disruptions to customers.”
Lakeland Linder International Airport is positioning itself as a potential alternative for Avelo Airlines during the FAA-imposed reductions.
Kris Hallstrand, airport director at Lakeland Linder, confirmed ongoing communications with Avelo Airlines:
“We are working closely with our airline partner to discuss ways to help mitigate the impact of the airspace reduction. We are working to make ourselves available as an alternative airport at this time.”
As of 2:30 p.m., it is unclear how these FAA flight cuts will affect the overall volume of flights at Lakeland Linder International Airport.
Author's summary: FAA flight reductions at major Florida airports may increase Avelo’s operations at Lakeland Linder Airport as it offers an accessible alternative during the government shutdown.
