Olympic gold medallist Ariarne Titmus shared insights into the surprising response following her announcement to retire from competitive swimming while still at her peak.
In a recent interview on the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About, Titmus revealed that despite the shock her retirement caused, nobody has asked her why she made such a decision.
“I knew it would be a shock to a lot of people. It was quite out of the blue,” Titmus said to podcast host Sarrah Le Marquand. “But I certainly wasn’t expecting the reception I received.”
After posting her retirement announcement at 8am Brisbane time, Titmus noticed a rapid spread of news and social media coverage within just half an hour.
“The morning I hit post, within half an hour, all over social media there were already articles and clips,” she said.
At 25 years old and still performing at her best, Titmus was concerned that people might not understand her motives, yet no one asked for her reasons.
“I am at the top of my game, I’m still only 25, and I was concerned that the wider public wouldn’t understand my reasoning. But I haven’t had one person asking me why.”
Titmus expressed contentment with her swimming achievements and eagerness to embrace new challenges. A key moment came when she was a commentator during the World Championships in July.
Summary: Ariarne Titmus was surprised no one asked why she retired at her peak, feeling ready to leave swimming behind after fulfilling her goals and seeking new pursuits.
