South African coach Darryl Fisher acknowledges that the Cook Islands will be strong favorites for Sunday’s IRL Rugby League World Cup 2026 qualifier at CommBank Stadium but is encouraged by the talent in the Rhinos squad.
"The squad is looking pretty good, they have been training really well and they are in good shape," Fisher said. "We are well aware of the level of opposition we are up against, but it is an opportunity for our players to play guys at that level. If they put their best foot forward and play to their capabilities, they will give themselves a chance. I certainly can’t ask any more of them in terms of their preparation and effort to get ready for the game. I am impressed by how they are looking and if they can manage the physical pressure."
Cook Islands and South Africa will compete for the final World Cup spot in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The Cook Islands squad, known as the Aitu, features NRL and Super League stars including KL Iro, Brendan Piakura, and Marata Niukore.
On the other hand, the Rhinos' lineup consists of players from state competitions across NSW, Queensland, and Western Australia, plus South African talent. Among them is Niel Beukes, a former Storm and Cowboys triallist making his international debut, who has played Super Rugby for the Pretoria-based Blue Bulls.
Author's summary: The Cook Islands enter as clear favorites in the World Cup qualifier, but South Africa's Rhinos show promise with a determined squad prepared to face elite competition.
