The Chargers' defense pressured Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, sacking him three times, including a safety, leading to a 25-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Keenan Allen made history by catching his 956th career pass, breaking the Chargers’ franchise record previously held by Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates. This milestone happened late in the game with just over two minutes remaining at SoFi Stadium, witnessed by a crowd of 72,174.
With the game nearly secured, Allen approached Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh to request a simple play to break the record. Harbaugh consulted offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who approved the plan. Quarterback Justin Herbert then completed a 7-yard pass to Allen on the right side.
“I was on the sideline and [Harbaugh] said, ‘We’re trying to get it to you,’” Allen recalled. “I said, ‘Hey, just run the speed sweep.’ It’s the easiest catch I get. They actually called me a genius. Like, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’”
Harbaugh said, “I thought it was a really good call. He wanted to do it in front of the home crowd and it was a great idea. We went with it and it was a great run, too. That was just tremendous.”
The Chargers combined strong defense and strategic offense to secure their win, highlighted by Keenan Allen’s franchise-record reception, supported by collaborative coaching decisions and precise execution.
