Ian Leavers, Queensland’s former police union leader and the state’s first Cross-Border Commissioner, was found dead at his Mount Ommaney home in Brisbane’s southwest around 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday. He was 57 years old. Police have confirmed the death is not considered suspicious, and an investigation remains ongoing.
Mr Leavers began his career with the Queensland Police in 1989, serving in multiple units including the criminal investigation and child protection branches. Over the years, he became a respected member of the force’s leadership.
From 2009 to 2024, he held the position of general president and CEO of the Queensland Police Union, representing members and advocating for workplace improvements. In 2021, he also joined the Police Federation of Australia before stepping down from both roles in 2024.
Following his resignation, Mr Leavers was appointed Queensland’s inaugural Cross-Border Commissioner in August 2024. In this role, he worked with local councils, community groups, and businesses to ensure cooperation and support for cross-border communities.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli described Mr Leavers as “dedicated, principled, and driven to make a difference for this state.”
His passing marks the loss of a long-serving figure in Queensland’s law enforcement community, remembered for his leadership and commitment to public service.
