J.J. Watt, in his first season as CBS’s No. 2 analyst alongside Ian Eagle, has been calling many Steelers games featuring his younger brother T.J. Watt. Despite the challenge, J.J. finds balancing professionalism with personal connection less difficult than expected.
Watt shared on The Dan Patrick Show that he maintains professionalism throughout the broadcast. He communicates with his brother before the game but focuses solely on commentary once the game begins. Ian Eagle handles play-by-play commentary, while J.J. provides analysis during brief moments, such as when a key play happens.
“Honestly, it’s not nearly as bad as I think people think it would be. You’re up there, and I know how to be professional. I talk to him before the game. But, during the game, Ian handles the play-by-play anyway, so I have like a 3 or 4 second where he makes a strip-sack fumble, where Ian is doing his job really well, and then I break down the play.”
J.J. Watt appreciates the kindness and fairness shown by opposing fans, who recognize his efforts to remain unbiased despite the personal connection. During a recent Steelers-Colts game, J.J. made a strip-sack fumble recovery himself in the second quarter, contributing significantly to Pittsburgh's 27-20 victory and ending a two-game losing streak.
“From the fan reaction, I’m very appreciative of all the opposing fans who have been so kind because I have consciously tried to keep it extremely unbiased.”
Ian Eagle called the play as it happened, and J.J. Watt analyzed it afterward, demonstrating a smooth collaboration that worked well for the broadcast and the fans.
J.J. Watt successfully balances being a professional analyst and a supportive brother, earning respect from fans while calling games featuring T.J. Watt.
