Jim Farley, Ford's CEO, had a revealing experience that pushed him to reshape the company’s approach to electric vehicles (EVs). Speaking on an upcoming episode of the Office Hours: Business Edition podcast, Farley described his reaction after dismantling Tesla’s Model 3 and several Chinese EVs.
"I was very humbled when we took apart the first Model 3 Tesla and started to take apart the Chinese vehicles. When we took them apart, it was shocking what we found," Farley told host Monica Langley.
He noted that Ford's Mustang Mach-E uses about 1.6 kilometers more electrical wiring than the Tesla, which adds significant weight and requires a larger, costlier battery.
Examining competitors' vehicles is a common practice in the automotive sector. For example, Xiaomi, originally a smartphone manufacturer turned EV maker, disclosed in September that their team purchased and disassembled three Tesla Model Ys to study their components.
Since becoming CEO in 2020, Farley has emphasized the need for Ford to evolve in response to the rapid advancements by companies like Tesla and Chinese startups. This led to the creation of Ford's dedicated EV division, Model E, in 2022, aimed at accelerating innovation in electric vehicles.
Summary: Ford CEO Jim Farley's eye-opening teardown of Tesla and Chinese EVs revealed design efficiencies that prompted a strategic overhaul, leading to the launch of Ford's new electric-focused division, Model E.
