The Sudan Media Forum (SMF), a coalition of independent media outlets and civil society organizations, voiced deep concern over the intense crackdown on journalists, editors, and media workers across Sudan.
According to the Forum, recent weeks have seen increasing threats, arbitrary arrests, and censorship targeting those reporting on the country’s political and humanitarian crises. SMF described this campaign as an attempt to “erase evidence and silence the truth about what is happening” in Sudan.
Several journalists have reportedly been detained without clear charges, while some newsrooms were subjected to raids and confiscation of equipment. SMF emphasized that such violations violate basic rights to free expression and access to information guaranteed by international law.
“The word will not be silenced, and the truth will not be buried. Sudan will not recover without a free press,” the coalition stated.
The Forum called on global media associations, press freedom groups, and foreign governments to demand the protection of Sudanese journalists and ensure access to reliable information. It also urged humanitarian agencies to document cases of repression and highlight the dangers facing media workers in conflict-affected regions such as Darfur and Kordofan.
SMF reaffirmed its commitment to continue reporting, despite growing risks. The coalition stressed that documenting the truth and amplifying the voices of affected communities remain central to Sudan’s democratic future.
“We work under pressure and fear, but our responsibility to the people of Sudan is greater than fear,” one SMF representative said.
