FireDrone Secures €161K from Venture Kick for Heat-Resistant Drones

Swiss startup FireDrone, a spin-off from Empa, has received €161,000 (CHF 150,000) from Venture Kick to advance the development of heat-resistant drones designed for extreme environments. These drones aim to enhance safety in emergency response and industrial inspection by protecting people, infrastructure, and the environment while improving operations in high-risk conditions worldwide.

Challenges in High-Temperature Environments

Firefighters and industrial safety teams face significant dangers when assessing environments such as burning buildings and industrial furnaces. These risks include exposure to toxic smoke, structural instability, and extreme heat. Conventional drones are usually unable to function in such conditions, limiting the ability to have real-time situational awareness.

FireDrone Technology and Applications

FireDrone develops autonomous drones that can endure temperatures up to approximately 200°C. Their platform incorporates thermal insulation and active cooling mechanisms to operate safely where regular drones fail. This innovation supports:

The company targets two main market segments: industrial inspections in high-temperature settings and public safety operations. Initial applications include industries such as cement, steel, aluminium, waste-to-energy, fertilizer, and glass production, alongside first-responder missions where heat and smoke impede typical drone usage.

FireDrone is creating drones “designed to protect people, infrastructure, and the environment, and to improve the safety of high-risk operations globally.”

This development could significantly transform how hazardous environments are monitored and managed, improving efficiency while minimizing human risk.

Author's Summary

FireDrone’s heat-resistant drones bring critical advancements to safety in extreme environments, enabling real-time hazard detection where conventional drones cannot operate.
