A suspicious package containing white powder was delivered to a United States military base in Maryland, causing several people to fall ill and some to be hospitalized, CNN reported on November 6.
A building on the base was evacuated following the opening of the suspicious package. Joint Base Andrews, near Washington, DC, issued a statement confirming that the building and its connected structure were evacuated, and a perimeter was established around the area as a precaution.
"As a precaution, the building and connecting building were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area."
Joint Base Andrews is known as the home base for Air Force One, the aircraft that transports the U.S. President.
CNN cited two sources familiar with the investigation, confirming the package contained an unknown white powder.
"Joint Base Andrews first responders had determined there was no immediate threat and had turned the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations."
Despite the initial reassurances, authorities continue to investigate the situation thoroughly.
