An expert has alerted the public to a valuable 50p coin that could be worth about £50, making it roughly 100 times its original face value. This coin was minted in 2017 to honor Sir Isaac Newton, with only 1.8 million pieces produced.
The coin quickly became popular among collectors, especially after the Royal Mint offered a "strike your own Isaac Newton 50p" experience the following year. However, the key to identifying this valuable coin lies in spotting a specific minting error.
In a video shared on TikTok, an expert known as the Coin Collecting Wizard explained the identifying feature of this rare coin. The error appears on the obverse side (the head side) where Queen Elizabeth’s portrait shows several extra lines.
"This 50p could have an error making it valuable."
These additional lines are not scratches but raised marks caused by a minting mistake called a "die clash."
"The Sir Isaac Newton 50p is one of the most popular 50ps in circulation shortly after it was issued in 2017. What you are looking for is for the obverse to have several extra lines across Queen Elizabeth's portrait. If your coin has these lines, then congratulations, you have found it."
The expert added that the extra lines resemble whiskers that stand slightly proud of the coin’s surface rather than indentations.
This rare 2017 Sir Isaac Newton 50p with a die clash error stands out as a highly valuable collectible, worth substantially more than its face value.
