Geno Smith faced criticism even after returning to play following a controversial hit against the Denver Broncos on Thursday. The Las Vegas Raiders quarterback endured as many as five sacks in the first half alone before going down awkwardly after a tackle by Nik Bonitto. The hit appeared to injure Smith’s leg during what initially seemed to be a routine scramble.
Smith spent time in the medical tent before testing his knee on the sideline. He performed light jogging while trainers evaluated him and ultimately returned to the field to finish the game. At that point, the Raiders were trailing by three points.
Nik Bonitto, who made the tackle, simply observed after Smith’s injury.
With Smith sidelined, Kenny Pickett assumed the quarterback role. Pickett is currently the only fully healthy QB on the Raiders roster, as Cam Miller remains on the practice squad and Aidan O’Connell is on injured reserve.
The Raiders took a chance on Smith during the offseason, hoping his experience would strengthen their offense. However, midway through the season, that hope has not been realized as Smith struggles with consistency. The team entered the Broncos game with a 2-6 record.
“Take Geno Smith out of the game, please.”
Smith has thrown the most interceptions this season, at 12.
Summary: Despite returning from injury, Geno Smith faces ongoing criticism as the Raiders’ performance and his consistency remain underwhelming halfway through the season.
