Manitoba’s health minister stated that the government did not support the Tory bill on breast cancer screening because its proposed measures are already being implemented.
Bill 203, known as The Earlier Screening for Breast Cancer Act, aimed to lower the screening age to 45 by the end of this year and to 40 by 2026. However, it did not pass beyond the third reading before the legislative session ended on Thursday afternoon.
“Our government is already doing more work than what (Tory MLA) Kathleen Cook’s bills ask,” Uzoma Asagwara said.
The government believes existing programs sufficiently cover the goals outlined by the Tory proposal, so no additional legislative changes were supported at this time.
Summary: Manitoba’s health minister emphasized that current breast cancer screening initiatives already exceed the requirements of the proposed Tory bill, which failed to pass in the recent legislative session.
