On Thursday evening at Selhorst Park, AZ suffered a convincing 3-1 defeat against English Premier League side Crystal Palace in the UEFA Conference League. Despite the loss, luck prevented Palace from increasing their lead further.
Palace, who earned their spot by winning the English FA Cup, launched their first notable attack in the 11th minute. Chris Richards headed a long ball back into the box, where Ismaila Sarr controlled it on his chest before his volley struck the post.
The home side soon earned a penalty following a through ball by Yeremy Pino to Sarr, who was set up by Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro. However, Jean-Philippe Mateta, known for his penalty prowess, saw his shot saved by Owusu-Oduro.
Palace quickly intensified their efforts, with Owusu-Oduro making a superb save to deny a strong header from Sarr and then Will Hughes hitting a volley that crashed against the crossbar.
Pressure paid off when a long ball into the box was flicked on by Sarr to center back Maxine Lacroix, whose powerful volley found the bottom corner, giving Palace the lead.
AZ tested Palace's goalkeeper Dean Henderson late in the first half when Sven Mijnans took a solid shot from outside the area, which Henderson pushed clear. Shortly after, Palace extended their advantage.
"Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has a good record from penalties, saw his effort saved by Owusu-Oduro."
Summary: Crystal Palace dominated AZ with tactical precision and resilience, converting key chances to secure a decisive 3-1 victory in the UEFA Conference League.
