UTSA Football Program Milestones
The UTSA Roadrunners are marking their 15th football season in 2025. As one of the more recent FBS teams and in their third year in the American Athletic Conference, UTSA has built its program from the ground up.
Early Years and Conference Moves
- The program began with a practice year in 2010.
- They played their first season as an FCS Independent in 2011.
- In 2012, UTSA joined the Western Athletic Conference.
- The next year, 2013, they moved into Conference USA.
- UTSA became a full FBS member starting in the 2014 season.
Record-Setting Inaugural Season
In 2011, during their inaugural game against Northeastern State, UTSA set NCAA modern startup program records by drawing 56,743 fans. They also averaged 35,521 fans over six home games that season, underscoring strong early support.
Postseason Appearances and Achievements
- UTSA's first postseason appearance was at the 2016 New Mexico Bowl in their sixth playing season.
- The following year, they notched their first win against a Big 12 team by defeating Baylor 17-10.
- 2021 marked historic milestones with a road win over Big Ten’s Illinois, capturing their first conference championship by beating WKU 49-42, and finishing with a 12-2 record along with a third bowl game appearance.
- They defended their league title in 2022 with a 48-27 win against North Texas and made their third consecutive bowl game, closing the year 11-3.
