Poignant Poppy Placements for Remembrance

Displays of poppies have appeared throughout Sleaford and across the district ahead of this weekend’s Remembrance events. As a first for the town, a projection of falling poppies will illuminate St Denys’ Church from dusk between Friday, November 7, and Tuesday, November 11, serving as a moving tribute to lives lost in both World Wars and other conflicts.

The installation, organized by the District Council and funded through the UK Shared Prosperity programme, complements recent improvements designed to enhance accessibility and the setting of the town’s War Memorial in the reconfigured Market Place. Visitors are encouraged to sit quietly and reflect beneath the gentle flow of the projected poppies.

Community Displays Across the Town

A striking arrangement of about 4,000 poppies crafted from wool, felt, and plastic now decorates the Wyvern Barrier at Monument Gardens on Southgate. Large willow sculptures made by William Alvey School pupils stand within the planters, while additional poppies adorn trees at the Riverside precinct and various other spots around the town.

These installations are part of a community-led project by the Sleaford Branch of the Royal British Legion, supported by the District Council. The Legion has also placed poppies as waymarkers along the River Slea, linking to Cogglesford Watermill, where volunteers have created another display and extended opening hours for visitors.

“People can sit in peace in the dark and reflect on the slow cycle of the falling poppies.”
