Micah Richards recalls the intense fear and uncertainty of big European nights, where he faced 90 minutes of relentless challenge. Bayern Munich always posed a formidable threat. Whether it was Franck Ribery or Arjen Robben, it felt like two Red Arrows speeding towards him. Richards could handle speed, but their skill to deceive and trick was unparalleled.
“It was a level above,” Richards tells Daily Mail Sport. “You knew what was going on in the Premier League, from week to week, but then we would step into the Champions League and there would be games when you’d be thinking: ‘what is going on here?’”
He remembers the constant struggles against Bayern Munich and also recalls facing Napoli’s star lineup with Edinson Cavani, Ezequiel Lavezzi, and Marek Hamsik. Despite losing 2-1, a draw away would have felt like a good result then.
However, the scenario has changed. Manchester City, Richards’s former team, comfortably defeated Napoli 2-0 in September, showing a shift in dominance.
Richards also reflects on Borussia Dortmund, describing them as a swarm of angry yellow and black wasps, attacking with fierce intensity.
Micah Richards highlights that the Champions League brought a unique, unpredictable challenge compared to the Premier League, though recent shifts have changed the dynamics of European football dominance.
