Les Nouveaux Riches Magazine – Interview with Sofia Goscinski

Artist Sofia Goscinski discusses her art practice, which spans sculpture and painting.

Childhood and Early Interest in Art

"I’m a child of immigrants. Growing up, I often felt 'otherly,' never quite fitting in. This sense of detachment shaped me and continues to flow through my work." Encouraged by her school art teacher, she began with photography.

Education and Influences

Sofia attended a high school focused on art history. Her mother, an art critic, immersed her in cultural discussions at home. Later, at the Academy of Fine Arts, she was introduced to contemporary practices and developed an interest in digital and video art, especially conceptual work.

She was influenced early on by minimalism and artists like Sol LeWitt and Bruce Nauman.

Exploration of Identity

Sofia approaches identity through consciousness. She explains,

"I started to understand why things happened to me, why I made certain decisions. In my work, this consciousness helps me understand my emotional state."

Her art explores vulnerabilities through experimentation, often combining concrete with paint in a tactile and physically expressive process that can be gentle or intense.

Transition and Artistic Process

Sofia’s artistic journey moved from photography and digital media into painting and sculpture. Reflecting on this evolution, she says,

"All of it is a learning process."

Author's summary: Sofia Goscinski's work intimately blends her personal history and evolving consciousness, shifting from digital art to hands-on sculpture and painting.
