Every November, the No Nut November (NNN) trend encourages men to abstain from ejaculation for the entire month. This means no intercourse, no masturbation, and no ejaculative orgasms. While it appears to be a harmless personal challenge, abstaining from ejaculation can lead to unexpected physical and mental effects.
To understand what happens after about a week of no ejaculation, we consulted Dr. Reena Gupta, Senior Consultant in Fertility at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, New Delhi. She explains the impact on physical, sexual, and mental health.
“There is no evidence that abstaining from ejaculation for a month causes long-term harm or benefits to your health. However, temporarily, stress levels may rise, and couples might face some challenges due to a lack of intimacy."
Dr. Gupta describes a phenomenon called “orgasm without ejaculation,” where increased blood flow to the pelvic region occurs without release. This can cause temporary discomfort or pain in the testes or pelvic area if it happens repeatedly.
“During sexual activity, there is increased blood supply to the pelvic organs; if you do [orgasm without ejaculation] often, there may be pain in your pelvic area.”
No Nut November does not cause lasting health effects but may lead to temporary stress and physical discomfort related to sexual inactivity and changes in pelvic blood flow.
Author’s summary: Abstaining from ejaculation for a week can lead to temporary stress and pelvic discomfort, but does not cause lasting health issues.
