A&O Productions and Neon Host Screening of ‘Sentimental Value’

In collaboration with Neon, A&O Productions presented the film “Sentimental Value” on Wednesday at AMC Evanston 12. Around 80 students attended the screening ahead of the film’s limited release on Friday.

“There’s nothing like a moviegoing experience surrounded by your peers,” said Communication senior Maeren Quirke, who attended the event. “The funnier moments were even funnier, and then the sad moments were even sadder because everyone around me was experiencing the emotions just as strongly.”

“Sentimental Value” tells the story of two sisters navigating a strained relationship with their father, a film director whose latest script draws from their turbulent family past. The movie stars Renate Reinsve, Elle Fanning, and Stellan Skarsgård. The dialogue is mainly in Norwegian, interspersed with some English.

While the film includes comedic moments that made the audience laugh frequently, its ending moved several attendees to tears. Medill senior Kennedy French shared that she sobbed during the final 10 minutes, when the sisters shared a poignant, bittersweet exchange.

“It was a cliche a little bit when she was like, ‘Well, it’s because I had you,’ but it was just the way it was done. I can’t even explain it,” French said.

Overall, the screening offered an emotionally rich experience enhanced by the presence of a shared audience.
