Van Jones, speaking live on CNN, highlighted a stark change in mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani's demeanor following his election win. The 34-year-old Democratic socialist appeared very different from the calm and composed candidate seen during the campaign.
Jones, a well-known progressive commentator and former Obama advisor, expressed concern about Mamdani’s angry and intense victory speech. He pointed out the sudden shift in tone compared to Mamdani’s previous public appearances.
“I think he missed an opportunity. I think the Mamdani that we saw on the campaign trail, who was a lot more calm, who was a lot warmer, who was a lot more embracing, was not present in that speech,” Jones explained on a post-election CNN panel.
“I think he was using the microphone in a way that he was almost yelling. That’s not the Mamdani that we’ve seen on TikTok and the great interviews and stuff like that.”
Jones described Mamdani’s speech as a “character switch,” observing that the “warm, open, embracing guy” from the campaign seemed to have disappeared.
After winning on Tuesday night, Mamdani delivered a loud, impassioned speech, quickly claiming a mandate to advance his ambitious progressive policies. He also taunted President Trump, energizing his supporters with a fiery tone.
Jones suggested that Mamdani may have been more effective by appealing to New Yorkers who might be cautious about his agenda, rather than taking a confrontational approach immediately after his win.
Author’s summary: Van Jones criticized mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s abrupt shift to an angry, aggressive style in his victory speech, contrasting it with the calm and approachable candidate seen during the campaign.
