Veteran center David Kampf has temporarily stepped away from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies to evaluate his next career move. During the offseason, the Toronto Maple Leafs explored trade options for him, but none materialized. Consequently, Kampf was placed on waivers during training camp and, after going unclaimed, assigned to the Marlies.
This outcome surprised many since General Manager Brad Treliving had signed the 30-year-old forward to a four-year, $9.6 million contract just over two years ago. The expectation was that Kampf would continue anchoring the fourth line and contributing on faceoffs and penalty kills.
However, his responsibilities decreased under coach Craig Berube, with several lower-cost players taking over his roster spot. So far this season, Kampf has appeared in only four of seven games for the Marlies.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the veteran “is taking a couple of days to consider his future.”
Kampf did not travel to Chicago for recent games, further signaling uncertainty about his next steps. Over the years, several NHL players such as Conor Sheary, Brandon Saad, and Filip Zadina have chosen to forgo guaranteed salaries to pursue better opportunities or a return to the NHL. Kampf may be contemplating a similar decision, though it could mean giving up more than $3 million owed through salary and bonuses.
David Kampf, facing a reduced role with the Marlies, is pausing to reconsider his path as he weighs leaving guaranteed money in search of a renewed NHL opportunity.
