The state of Florida published the findings of an efficiency study on its public universities. Conducted by the Florida Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the review covers operations and spending patterns of the 12 public universities in the State University System. The report was presented at this week’s state Board of Governors meeting.
Governor Ron DeSantis stated during a Wednesday news conference that the Florida DOGE team has worked to cut millions of dollars previously allocated to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs at public universities, targeting what he described as “waste and woke ideology.”
The Florida DOGE has canceled or repurposed over $33 million in DEI-related grants across state universities.
The department also revealed plans to redirect or cancel $10.6 million in grants for community colleges. These efforts are part of the governor’s announcement on February 24, naming the review of higher education institutions as a central focus for the department.
The audit’s results will guide the Board of Governors and State Board of Education in eliminating any wasteful spending.
This analysis aims to improve efficiency by recommending cuts to unnecessary expenditures within Florida's public universities and colleges.
