Filming has begun on the new drama A Long Winter, directed by Andrew Haigh, best known for All of Us Strangers. The project brings together an impressive ensemble of actors.
Leading the film is Caitríona Balfe, alongside Ebon Moss-Bachrach from The Bear and Fantastic Four: First Steps, Kit Connor from Heartstopper, Fred Hechinger from Gladiator II, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai from Reservation Dogs, Manuel Garcia Rulfo from Jurassic World: Rebirth, and David Furr from The Gilded Age.
The production is a collaboration between the US streaming platform Mubi and the UK’s Film4, and filming is already underway.
The film is based on a story by Colm Tóibín about a family living in a remote mountain region, originally set in rural Spain, as they prepare for a harsh winter. The story was first included in the 2006 collection Mothers & Sons and was reissued separately in September to align with the film’s release.
“This collection shows Tóibín to be a master storyteller. He is especially adept at startling narrative turns that combine insight with unsettling ambiguity... the final passages of A Long Winter are also tremendously powerful.”
The review from The Stinging Fly praised Tóibín’s emotional control and his skill in crafting subtle yet profound storytelling.
Caitríona Balfe headlines Andrew Haigh’s new film A Long Winter, a poignant adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s tale about isolation, family, and resilience amid mountain solitude.
