Joji has released his third single, “Past Won’t Leave My Bed,” from his upcoming album Piss In the Wind, set to drop on February 6. Earlier this week, the Japanese-Australian musician also unveiled the track “If It Only Gets Better.”
This melancholic piano ballad was co-written by Joji, Jonathan Xavier Cunningham, fussy, P.J.A. Williams, and produced by Dan Farber. The song captures Joji’s emotional turmoil as he struggles to move on from a past relationship.
In the opening verse, Joji sees memories of his ex everywhere. Sleep offers only brief relief from heartbreak. As the chorus builds with soft guitar melodies, he admits that he cannot escape his past. The second verse continues this theme, as Joji realizes that even his coping mechanisms are beginning to fail.
“His reference to lullabies recalls his 2020 song ‘Like You Do,’ where he sings, ‘If you ever go, all the songs that we like / Will sound like bittersweet lullabies,’” noted Genius user @Hey_Its_Ion.
In the music video, Joji drifts across the country, trying to escape his sorrow by engaging in reckless behavior and connecting with shady characters along the way.
