Thousands Could Die in UK's 'Worst Flu Season on Record', Experts Warn

NHS England chief executive Sir Jim Mackey said there was no doubt this winter will be one of the toughest the health service has ever faced, as hospitals already operate at full capacity and patients face long waits.

“There is no doubt this winter will be one of the toughest the health service has ever faced,” said Sir Jim Mackey, NHS England chief executive.

Experts are warning Britain to brace itself for thousands of deaths and the worst flu season ever recorded. Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shows flu-related deaths in England rose sharply last winter to 7,757, up from 3,555 the previous year. Child deaths also increased from 34 to 53.

Australia recently experienced its worst flu season on record with more than 410,000 reported cases — a pattern that experts say often foreshadows the UK’s upcoming season. Japan is also facing a severe flu outbreak, forcing many schools to close and putting thousands in hospital.

In response to the growing concern, England’s chief nurse has issued a “flu jab SOS,” urging the public to get vaccinated to avoid serious illness. The warning comes just days before resident doctors in England plan a five-day strike, further straining the already burdened NHS system.
