Multiple people became ill following the delivery of a “suspicious package” containing white powder and political propaganda to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, near Washington, DC.
The package was received and opened on Thursday inside a building housing the Air National Guard Readiness Center. According to sources close to the investigation, the package contained a white powder, though its exact nature remains unknown.
“As a precaution, the building and connecting building were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area,”
CNN reported, citing a statement from Joint Base Andrews.
First responders from Joint Base Andrews arrived quickly, assessed that there were no immediate threats, and handed over the scene to the Office of Special Investigations. A HAZMAT team conducted an initial field test which did not detect any hazardous substances.
Despite this, several individuals were transported to the Malcolm Grow Medical Center located on the base for treatment. The specific conditions of those exposed have not been disclosed.
Authorities are also investigating the political propaganda included in the package, but no further information has been released.
