Ethan Hawke on Working with Taylor Swift

During his first visit to Miami on November 2, Ethan Hawke reflected warmly on collaborating with Taylor Swift. The actor was in town to receive the Miami Film Festival’s Variety Virtuoso Award and discussed his long career in a conversation with Variety’s co–editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh.

A Career Retrospective and a New Collaboration

As Hawke looked back on past collaborations with Hollywood icons such as Robert De Niro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ben Stiller, and Julia Stiles, he became especially animated when speaking about working with Swift on her music video for “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone. The project reunited him with his Dead Poet’s Society co-star Josh Charles and was both written and directed by Swift.

Maya Hawke’s Role in the Project

The collaboration came about through his daughter, actor Maya Hawke. Ethan recalled how unexpectedly the opportunity arose.

“My daughter is creating opportunities in my life. I get a text from my daughter saying, ‘Hey dad, Taylor Swift wants your number.’ So I guess they met. And anyway, Taylor Swift is a Dead Poet’s Society fan, and so, hell, I’ll take what I can get,”

he said with a laugh.

Praise for Taylor Swift

Hawke went on to express admiration for Swift’s artistry and leadership during the filming process.

“That woman is incredible. She’s a force of nature.”

His praise came as Swift continues to dominate the charts, recently releasing a reimagined version of her No. 1 single from The Life of a Showgirl.
