North Melbourne remain two victories away from completing an undefeated season after overpowering Hawthorn in Friday night’s AFLW qualifying final. Despite a below-par performance in attack, the Roos displayed superior composure and structure, overcoming an injury-hit but spirited Hawks lineup before 4,392 supporters at Ikon Park in Carlton.
The win pushed North’s unbeaten run, dating back to last season, to 25 consecutive matches as they triumphed 5.12 (42) to Hawthorn’s 0.3 (3). The Roos will have a bye next week, while the Hawks hope their injured players recover quickly for the upcoming elimination semi-final.
“That’s probably one area that we’ll look at,” said coach Darren Crocker. “Their ability to not just defend inside the defensive 50, but also put pressure on the ball carrier — sometimes the ball carrier was under pressure and they couldn’t move the ball where they wanted. We could have been a little better with our delivery.”
Libby Birch, Jasmine Garner, Ash Riddell, and Erika O’Shea were among North Melbourne’s standout performers in a tense and physical contest. Eliza West, Laura Stone, Tilly Lucas-Rodd, and Aileen Gilroy led the way for Hawthorn.
Kaitlyn Ashmore sustained a calf injury and did not return for the final quarter, while Aine McDonagh battled on despite what appeared to be a painful knee issue.
North Melbourne powered into the AFLW preliminary final, extending their unbeaten streak to 25 as Hawthorn suffered injuries in a tough, one-sided contest at Ikon Park.
