Rosemead, starring Lucy Liu, is set to hit theaters on December 5. PEOPLE has an exclusive trailer revealing Liu in a deeply emotional role as Irene, a mother facing the challenges of her teenage son’s schizophrenia diagnosis.
Directed by Eric Lin and adapted by Marilyn Fu from a 2017 Los Angeles Times article, the film is based on a true story about a Chinese American mother and son. Liu, 56, stars alongside Lawrence Shou, portraying a family struggling to cope with mental illness.
Liu’s character, Irene, is described as “an ailing woman who takes drastic measures to protect her troubled teenage son” Joe. As his dark obsessions intensify and time runs out, she faces impossible decisions regarding how far she will go and what she is willing to sacrifice for him.
Since its premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, Rosemead has earned Liu multiple film festival awards, highlighting her powerful performance in this dramatic role.
“This isn't going to just go away like some cold. He needs to learn to live with it. You both do.”
The original article by Frank Shyong in the Los Angeles Times recounted the harrowing experience of a terminally ill mother who made a tragic choice dealing with her son's schizophrenia diagnosis.
