Lucy Liu has officially embraced her lob era, debuting her shortest haircut in years for her starring role in the upcoming drama Rosemead. The Charlie’s Angels star revealed her new hairstyle—a sleek, side-parted bob that falls just above the collarbone—in the film’s trailer.
Rosemead premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June and is set for theatrical release on December 5. The story follows Irene (played by Liu), her son Joe (Lawrence Shou), and their life after his schizophrenia diagnosis. The film is adapted from a 2017 Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong titled “A dying mother's plan: Buy a gun. Kill her son.”
This role signals a shift for Liu, stepping away from her action and comedy-heavy repertoire that includes Ally McBeal, Watching the Detectives, and Why Women Kill. The actress described Rosemead as a psychological story with thriller elements.
“As there was not a lot that was known about this family, the script had to be pieced together,” Liu told Variety. “In some ways, it’s a little bit of a thriller, because people know the final act and some of the details, and then the rest had to be kind of filled in, in order to understand the dynamic between Irene and her son.”
Speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival, Liu explained her fascination with complex, emotionally charged projects like Rosemead, emphasizing how such stories offer deeper human insight and challenge conventional roles she has played in the past.
Author’s Summary: Lucy Liu unveils a chic lob and a darker acting turn in Rosemead, a gripping drama inspired by a true story premiering December 5.
