Beer, Wine And Spirits Distributors Tell Congress Not To Ban Hemp THC Products As 'Demand For Alcohol Has Shifted Downward' - Marijuana Moment

Alcohol Distributors Oppose Congress Ban on Hemp THC Products

More than 50 alcohol distributors have united in opposition to Congressional efforts aimed at banning intoxicating hemp products. They emphasized that declining alcohol demand has been offset by growth in the cannabis market, which supports their industry.

In a letter sent to congressional leaders, the coalition of beer, wine, and spirits wholesalers urged lawmakers to avoid language that would prohibit intoxicating hemp consumable products through budget legislation.

“Instead, we offer our support to help Congress effectively regulate and tax these products like alcohol,” the letter states.

The distributors explained the shift in consumer preferences by noting:

“As demand for alcohol has shifted downwards in recent years, hemp products have created jobs, driven new investment, and helped us meet changing consumer demand.”

They warned that banning these products would not eliminate demand, but rather push it into unregulated markets, harming public health, safety, and legitimate businesses.

“If prohibition is enacted, that demand will not disappear—it will simply move into unregulated channels, undermining both public health, safety and legitimate businesses.”
