A well-known chef has shared fond memories of Swindon, following the recent closure of his only Wiltshire restaurant. Rick Stein, a celebrated chef, presenter, and restaurateur, is known for owning a chain of popular restaurants across the UK and authoring numerous cookbooks.
On October 5, Stein closed his Marlborough restaurant in Wiltshire. Shortly after, he postponed his theatre tour that was scheduled to visit Swindon this winter due to challenging economic conditions impacting pubs and restaurants.
“When I was a young lad and attending Oxford University, I used to come to Swindon every week to print the student newspaper called The Cherwell,” Stein said.
“I haven't been to Swindon in many years and I should probably go back, but I do have very fond memories of it. The town always makes me think of the smell of the printing press and brings it all back.”
Despite becoming a household name alongside chefs like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, Stein recalls spending much of his early twenties traveling weekly to Swindon for his newspaper work.
The chef also discussed the tough economic realities currently facing the hospitality industry, highlighting the difficulties that pubs and restaurants endure today.
“The difficult economic challenges facing pubs and restaurants today are significant,” Stein shared during his interview.
