Switzerland continues to lead in digital competitiveness despite rising global trade tensions, securing the top spot in the 2025 IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking (WDCR). It is followed by the United States and Singapore.
The annual ranking, released by the Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, evaluates 69 economies on their capacity to adopt and implement digital technologies for economic and social progress. Switzerland's top position highlights its strengths in digital infrastructure, education, and innovation ecosystems.
IMD experts caution that increasing trade fragmentation and evolving regulatory frameworks could jeopardize Switzerland’s lead in the near future.
“Digitally speaking, Switzerland has experienced two important developments so far this year: the cataclysmic effects of tariff changes and the approval of e-ID by a razor-thin margin (50.4% in favor),” said Arturo Bris, Director of IMD’s World Competitiveness Center (WCC). “It’s clear that the Swiss aren’t as prepared as we might have hoped to embrace the challenges of technology today.”
The IMD notes that trade conflicts increasingly affect data flows, technical standards, and investment priorities, all critical elements shaping global digital competitiveness.
Author’s summary: Switzerland secures the top digital competitiveness spot in 2025 but faces growing threats from global trade tensions and regulatory challenges that may affect its future standing.
